My former Electoral Registration Officer sent me my postal voting forms a week or so ago, and as I have not lived in the constituancy for some twelve years, I decided to scroll through the candidates web sites to find out something about them to help me decide who to vote for. I ignored the usual fringe parties but was impressed by the Liberal Democrat candidate's website. It contained lots of information about what he has done as the sitting M.P., some of his background, lists of questions asked in the house and his particular subject interests. More importantly it gave a complete listing of his parliamentary expenses, including staff that he employs, his accomodation in London and explanations as to any over or reduced spending in comparison to previous periods.

I have emailed the candidate in question to express my appreciation of his openness. I wonder if he will reply. (I am happy to report that he did respondand very positively.) [ I can also report that he was re-elected.]

The really interesting matter, I think, occurs in the opening sentence of this piece. The fact that I have not lived in that constuency for twelve years yet I have the ability to help decide who will represent the present inhabitants in Parliament from 7th May this year.

It does strike me as strange that I have this power, yet am resident of another country where my only voting rights are towards elections concerning the mayor and local council and the European Parliament, but I cannot influence the election of the politicians who govern my everyday life in my adopted country.

Can somebody explain this situation to me? I have, by the way, completed and returned my U.K. postal vote.

Reflect for a moment on the amount of the Great British Debt that was highlighted on the BBC Money Box programme.

Total Government debt this year is £952 billion but will rise to £1,095 billion next year. So in 2011/12 the state will have borrowed £24,333 for each of its 45 million adult citizens. This is almost identical to the £24,274 personal debt of people who go for help to the Consumer Credit Counselling Service.

Some government spending - like state pensions - is protected and all politicians have agreed that some other things - like the NHS - have to be preserved.

So what there is left has to bear the brunt of the cuts. The arithmetic shows that unprotected spending has to be cut by around a fifth even to meet the targets set out in the Budget. No wonder the Financial Times said this week that there was a £30 billion black hole in all the parties' manifestos. So whoever is Chancellor on the weekend after May 6th spending cuts if not tax rises will definitely be on his agenda.

No ranting from me on this one - the figures above speak for themselves.

Spectemur Agendo

For many years this two word Latin motto was emblazoned on my breast pocket as part of the badge of my school uniform. A brown blazer for lower school and a black blazer for sixth formers, not that that piece of information has any relevance. I knew, as part of the school’s indoctrination on the history of said establishment, that the motto meant ‘Let us be judged by our actions’. And there that piece of information rested, never knowingly affecting my life or attitudes in any way

It comes originally from Book XIII of Ovid's Metamorphoses where it is attributed to the hero Ajax:
"Denique (quid verbis opus est?) spectemur agendo!"
which most literal translations render as
"Finally (what is the use of words?) let us be seen together in action!"

Why some fifty years after sporting that motto on my school blazer I should keep recalling those words is a mystery to me, as are most happenings in my life these days. Seeing more and more acquaintances shuffle off the mortal coil perhaps highlights for me the truth behind the words Spectemur Agendo because the majority of use are so judged. The actions that we make, whether large or small, good or bad, significant or trivial are the things whereby our family, friends, enemies, employers and society in general will judge the validity of our life. When they weigh up the black stones and the white stones of my life I hope that a couple of good actions will rest in peoples minds and affectionate smiles appear on their faces.

But what saddens me is the fact that there are strata’s of our society for whom that motto would be an anathema. Do politicians really consider those words other than on an election day when they require your support? If they did perhaps we would not have seen the shameful abuse of the parliamentary expenses system followed by, in many cases, a dumbfounded disbelief that they had ever done any wrong. Then party political witch hunts ensue, fortunes are spent reinvigorating an already flawed system with another system which some will manipulate for their own advantage.

An whilst H.M Treasury has decided that all those in receipt of a local Government Pension should receive no increase for the forthcoming year, still the bankers pay each other excessively for, in many cases, failure. My local Authority Pensions Department when informing me of the situation seemed to justify the position by reminding me that my state pension had increased by 2.5% from April 2010 which, in fact, is an exageration of the truth as only the basic state pension increased by that much, any addition parts of the pension which I had earned and paid for remained at the previous years level. Effectively therefore I received approximately 1.5% increase in State Pension which in itself will probably be written off by fluctuations in exchange rates between the euro and pound over the coming year.

Lloyds TSB Bank have also decided that the bank’s pensioners will receive no increase for the forthcoming year simply because some index figure hidden deep into the pension scheme regulations failed to achieve the required target, yet their Chief Executive, Eric Daniels, who led them into the position of needing the U.K. tax payer to bail them out continues to receive a remuneration of some £1,121,000 per annum, the Group Financial Director some £1.7 million and the group Wholesale Director over £1.8 million. They also have short and long-term incentive schemes that include annual bonuses of up to 200% of basic salary, with the exception of Daniels, who can boost his salary with a 225% bonus payout.

So if 'Spectemur Agendo' is the judging criteria then my only response can be Mene, mene, tekel upharsin - Thou art weighed in the balance and found wanting

Election Time

So the battle to form the new government has started with the political parties telling us what wonderful people we are and how we will all work together to make Great Britain a wonderful place again. No mention of course that they allowed the greedy bankers and many of their corrupt parliamentary colleagues to drive it to its present situation in the first place.

The parties and their candidates make no real mention of how the next government, of whatever colour it may be, will deal with the hugh debt burden that faces the country. They mention some obscure savings plans using figures plucked from the air and, whilst they continue with the politcal half truths and posturing, the good old British public know damn well that there are hard times ahead. Jobs will be lost, services to all shades and needs of society will be diminished or lost and taxes of various sorts will rise - and none of them has got the guts or the honesty to say so in simple words.

The public have been dragged through the mire of the banking collapse and the filth of the politicians expenses and their subsequent protestations of innocence, and we are now to be subjected to the bullshit of the manifesto and the insulting of the publics' intelligence.

There are some 5.5 million ex-pats and only a pathetic 19,000 or so of those are registered to vote in UK elections. If only two million bothered to vote that would produce an electorate the equivalent of 28 parliamentary constituencies or nearly four and half per cent of the available seats in the House of Commons.

So, you politicians, beware the silverhaired ex-pat voter! and as for you ex-pats, get off your butts, register to vote and do something positive for a change instead of wingeing and leaving it to others.

Why Silver Haired Ex-Pats

I'm a blog virgin. This is the first time I have felt compelled to air my thoughts or opinions for the general consumption of all and sundry. I usually save that for the few friends I possess, which is probably why I possess only a few friends.

The reason for the blog is to highlight what I consider stupid, unfair and in some cases unjust treatment by numerous organisations towards those retired British citizens who choose to settle in a country other than Great Britain.

For example, why cannot I open an account with a British bank of my choice on the British mainland just because I have an address in France. The banks tell you it is not their policy to do so but cannot, or will not, tell you why it is not. They will also blame the Government but, to my knowledge there is no such ruling by the Government, merely the application of money laundering regulations, to which I can comply by proving who I am and from where my income is sourced.

I will admit I am not a rich, ex mafia foreign citizen with enough money to buy a English football club for the purposes of bankrupting them. I am a British citizen, a British passport holder and pay income tax in both the U.K. and my adopted country, so why do I not have the freedom of choice as to where to deposit my small local government pension, which has to be paid into a U.K bank?

There are other examples of the frustrations of living the ex-pat life, some of which I will no doubt ramble on about in the future, until then the politicians should remember that many of use still retain the right to vote in the U.K. elections and May is not far away.
